Great Animation, Father-Son Relationship a problem

Right, there were great animations. Astro Boy is a warm, affectionate, likable super hero. Troubling was the father-son relationship. Our 6 and 3 year old were shaken by the father’s attitude towards the boy. I don’t know why the writers decided to take that route in the story. Ambiguous also was the fired scientist on earth and his relationship with the earth kids. It seems the good and bad needs clearer markers so viewers don’t have to worry about how the characters are being perceived and then revealed. Astro was great, the robot personalities and robot fights were great, kid peers good — guess the adult models were the collection of characters that were lacking. Some situations may require some explaining to your kids. There we no suggestive issues or improprieties, as far as I could see.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” Movie Review

“P.O.T.C. 2″ Plot Summary

Jack Sparrow races to recover the heart of Davy Jones to avoid enslaving his soul to Jones’ service, as other friends and foes seek the heart for their own agenda as well. add synopsis

Viva Pirates!

Well, first of all, when I read the review for the movie in my hometown paper, I was a little scared that Pirates might be a let down. The trailer and the movie clips, it seemed, didn’t really let on that there was much of a story line — that it just kind of goes on and on and on, like the Matrix 2, with no storyline — just fighting. Plus, most people do agree: sequels are hardly ever as good as the originals. And in this case, it’s true… Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest isn’t the original. But, its an awesome movie in its own right! There are a few surprises in this movie. A few characters come back from the first that you wouldn’t expect to see in the second. but… um! that’s all I’m saying. This movie is definitely a lot more violent and gory than the first one. Don’t bring the little kids to it. But, trust me — this is not a Matrix-type movie… There is an actual storyline. And a good one at that. Capt. Jack Sparrow is back as well as Elizabeth and Will, who are forced to find him and obtain his compass, or else they will face the gallows. Well, actually, Will has to find him. Elizabeth escapes, and yes… as you’ve seen in the trailers, she does dress up like a man for this movie. Making it all the more comical. (you’ll see what I mean).

The comedy was superb in this movie. Of course, it wasn’t as good as the first, but you can’t expect it to be. Yes, there were a few instances were they could’ve shortened the fighting scenes, but it was very well shot and scripted

I wish they would’ve changed a few things about the movie, but you can’t have everything. And don’t expect everything to be resolved at the end. No! There’s a cliff-hanger ending that leaves you wanting the watch the next one the moment the credits start rolling

If you like the first movie, you’ll like the second… And that’s all I’m saying

Jack Sparrow: ‘Why is the rum *always* gone?’ (he stands up and staggers) ‘Oh… That’s why.’

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” Movie Review

“P.O.T.C. 3″ Plot Summary

Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle.

At World’s End

The more I think about this movie, the more I like it. This is strange, considering my low expectations. The first film was fun, and I was very happy to see swashbuckling returning to movies, but I never really bought into the script. I wasn’t convinced that pirates were some sort of blood-bound ‘race’, and I was powerfully confused by the distance between and physical relationships of various locations. But, still good fun. The second film just kind of made me mad; I loved the ending, but it was just one example of how much it was a standard sequel: every single quirk of the first film was referenced, every single character had to return, and it HAD to be structured – nay, plotted – like Empire Strikes Back. This included re-introducing the Han Solo-Leia love story where the female lead wants the anti-hero, just to appease all the screaming Johnny Depp fans. It begged to be liked, but aside from a great score, great effects, and some very funny moments, it just came off as trite

And then we get At World’s End, which has everything you could possibly want in a pirate fantasy film: Legendary ships riddling each other with cannon fire in a whirlpool, screaming buccaneers swinging from one ship to the next, sword-fights on crow’s nests, and all that in about fifteen minutes. The rest is an admittedly convoluted story that is much more clearly plotted than the second film, while still taking breaks for letting us spend time with characters we weren’t so sure about last time, but are once again fond of. Maybe it’s Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, or the overall simplicity of the plot, but it just worked, and I had a great time

I was legitimately surprised and concerned at what the plot did with our heroes and villains, and was very satisfied with everyone’s status in the end. I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing another Pirates movie now, but I kind of think everything that needs to be done is in this film

I can’t wrap up without mentioning the very nice abstract stuff Verbinksi and co. did with the journey to Davey Jones’ Locker. It takes guts to do really surreal stuff with a $300 million Happy Meal blockbuster, but they really did some new, interesting things with their bottomless bag of tricks

A- Curse of the Black Pearl: B+ Dead Man’s Chest: B

    “Underworld: Evolution” Movie Review

    “Underworld 2″ Plot Summary

Underworld: Evolution continues the saga of war between the vampires and the Lycans. The film goes back…

    A truly sensational action/horror

Underworld:Evolution is without question one of the top action horror movies in the past five years. Tons of amazing action sequences shot by a director who understands the genre and how to make them look good. There are no crazy close-ups with music video editing which exist in so many other films purely to cover up how weak the fight choreography and special effects are. Not in Evolution. They are shot so professionally and executed seamlessly. There is tons of gore and over the top followed by even more over the top death and destruction! And the great thing is that the story (no matter how unbelievable) is actually quite enthralling. Lots of back story in terms of the history of werewolves and vampires and how they came to exist etc. etc. Kate Beckinsale could be the hottest chick in Hollywood. Solid acting, great special effects, superb cinematography (check out the lighting in several scenes) and extremely precise and well timed editing. This movie by far surpasses the original. Sure there are some continuity problems but big deal. A must for horror and action fans alike. AND THOSE OF YOU WHO THOUGHT THAT KATE BECKINSALE SPINNING AND SHOOTING THROUGH THE FLOOR IN THE ORIGINAL WAS COOL, CHECK OUT ‘NEMESIS’ WHICH UNDERWORLD RIPPED OFF AND YOU’LL SEE SOMETHING MUCH MUCH COOLER!!

“The Boat That Rocked” Movie Review

    “Pirate Radio” Plot Summary

A period comedy about an illegal radio station in the North Sea in the 1960s.

    Very funny and clever

The best feel-good-factor film I’ve seen since Little Miss Sunshine. In 1967 I won a transistor radio and spent the next ten years listening to Radio Caroline (at night under the pillow, so the early scene is uncanny!!) The film is a clever amalgam of pirate radio fact and myth featuring barely disguised DJs, and cameo scenes from album covers, fashion shoots, etc.. (orgy in the hold = Electric Ladyland; girls arriving on the prow of the boat = Mary Quant…; poster scenes = Abbey Road…, etc.) Anyone’s guess if the station/boat owner is based on Ronan O’Rahilly. The kind of guy who, 20 years later might have founded a low-cost airline; The Marine Offences Act was a heinous offense against liberty and popular culture, worthy of the cold war opponents

Beautifully filmed, a bit like smoking grass while listening to CSNY.

An origins story centered on the centuries-old feud between the race of aristocratic vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.

    Absolutely Loved it!!!!!

This one is my favorite of all of them!!! I loved Underworld and Underworld Evolution but since this one revolves around my favorite character it has become the best one to me. I loved the casting of Rhona Mitra as Sonja. It’s very evident why Victor was so attached to Selene. Michael Sheen as Lucien as always was awesome, only in this one there’s so much more of him, scenes and personality. The story is good, the action is GREAT!!! In this one you really see why Lucien was such a menace to the vampires and not just an inconvenient annoyance. Just saw it last night and could have gotten in line to see it again when it ended. Plan on seeing it again this weekend.

    “Love Actually” Movie Review

    “Love Actually” Plot Summary

Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely and interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

    Actually…excellent

Well this movie is actually…excellent. It includes lots of characters who are all in love in their own special way and the whole story is set in London five weeks before Christmas. We meet Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), old singer who tries to get back on top with help of his loyal manager Joe (Gregor Fisher); David (Hugh Grant) has just become the new Prime Minister and he instantly falls in love with his new personal assistant Natalie (Martine McCutcheon); Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman) are married couple with their own problems; Sarah (Laura Linney) is women torn between a man she loves and her sick brother; Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Juliet (Keira Knightley) are fresh married, but Peter’s best friend Mark (Andrew Lincoln) is in love with Juliet; John (Martin Freeman) and Judy (Joanna Page) met on shooting of porn movie; Jamie Bennett (Colin Firth) moves to France after he found out that his girl is cheating him with his brother and there he meets Aurelia (Lucia Moniz), young Portuguese woman; Colin Frissell (Kris Marshall) hopes that he’ll find ‘normal’ girl(s) in America; and finally there is Sam (Thomas Sangster), who is young boy and also in love, which makes a problem to his stepfather Daniel (Liam Neeson).

So many characters and so many actors that are beautifully composed in this movie. All that is achieved Richard Curtis in his directorial debut. His story is for everyone. I think that lots of people could find themselves in this characters that are full of life and very real. Maybe the only characters that are little stretched are the ones of John and Judy. It’s hard to believe that porn actors are so shy like they are both presented. But here Curtis makes fun with everything. That’s why I love Britons so much. They smile to others equally as they smile to themselves. ‘Love Actually’ rises above many romantic movies because it has great story, capable direction, top class actors and magnificent soundtrack mixed with some old and some new songs. I really can’t talk about all the actors in this movies cause it would last for days; instead I’ll mention only two: Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson. Nighy brings breath of fresh air to his character while he’s making fun with his manager, his own hit song and Britney Spears. Emma Thompson, ah Emma Thompson. She makes acting so easy, makes you feel that anyone could act. She’s so natural and believable, such extraordinary actress. There is also lots of cameo roles (Billy Bob Thornton, Claudia Schiffer, Denise Richards, Sienna Guillory…) and one hilarious appearance of Rowan Atkinson as jewelery salesman (he’s like Christmas ghost, you know when he helps young Sam).

Well, I almost forgot to say what is this movie about (at least how I understand it). It gives us a message; that we must search and struggle for love, we must make sacrifice, just like Jamie and Sam for example did, while Sarah choose the other way (her brother) and she gave up. Actually everything is said in the beginning; there is enough love on this world (great idea with airport arrivals). Actually, I advice you to watch this movie. Actually, I gave 10 to it, cause it’s so much better then any other romantic movie I’ve ever watched. Or I could just say, love actually.

    “Underworld” Plot Summary

Selene, a beautiful vampire warrior, is entrenched in a war between the vampire and werewolf races. Although she is aligned with the vampires, she falls in love with Michael, a werewolf who longs for the war to end.

Underworld A Decent Gothic Sci-Fi Action Adventure

Underworld is a decent Gothic sci-fi action adventure from director Len Wiseman who does a good job in making this movie but there are some flaws that weigh it down. I’ll get back to that later. Kate Beckinsale turns in a solid performance as the lead Selene a vampire Death Dealer in the middle of a war between her race and werewolves known as Lycans. She looks great in leather and is convincing as the character especially in the action/fight sequences. Scott Speedman is decent as Michael Corvin who eventually becomes a powerful vampire/werewolf hybrid because something to do with his blood. He gets a few fight sequences near the end that are impressive but for the most of the movie he’s either being chased, running, or being held prisoner. Speedman however like Beckinsale is good as his character. Michael Sheen is terrific as Lucian the Lycan leader whose supposed to have been dead and is after Michael for unknown reasons until those motives are revealed later on in the film. Sheen’s role may get cut short near the end but he does a great job of portraying someone who you’re not sure is either the villain or a man simply driven by revenge who is willing to do whatever is necessary to defend his race. Well done. Bill Nighy is equally impressive as one of the vampire Lord’s Viktor but he isn’t given a lot of screen time and his showdown between both Michael and Selene near the end felt a bit rushed. He’s also easily defeated but Nighy is effective in the role none the less. The rest of the cast including Shane Brolly, Sophia Myles, and a brief appearance by Wentworth Miller are okay in their roles but don’t have much to do. The action/fight sequences are well executed but a slow pace in between made the movie fee a little long. The film seemed to be juggling a bit too many characters and it sort of lacked a central villain because there are quite a few of them in this one. If they had focused on just one instead of Nighy, Brolly, Sheen, and many more the movie would’ve been a little better. It did have a Gothic feel which seemed to fit with the tone of the film and made it a little different than some sci-fi action movies out there. The music seemed to match well with what was happening on the screen as well. So despite some flaws Underworld may not be the greatest movie ever made but it’s certainly not the worst either. Overall Underworld has an intricate story, intense action, some suspense, cool special effects, and good performances by the cast who make this sci-fi movie worth watching at least once.

    “Valkyrie” Movie Review

    “Valkyrie” Plot Summary

Based on actual events, a plot to assassinate Hitler is unfurled during the height of WWII.

Great Movie – Kids Loved It Too

There’s been a lot of comments about the movie itself, and I agree with all the good ones. Tom Cruise has grown up; he did a masterful job conveying von Stauffenberg. The supporting cast was superb, plot taut and captures the heart of the resistance without getting bogged down in details, etc. If any of you are thinking about taking kids, but are wondering about possible violence, or if the story line is too convoluted for them, I thought you might be interested in my experience. Small children are better left at home, but older children (9-up. You are the best judge of your child) will do fine, with a little help. This is a movie that is Better if you know what the story is, so explain the background (who these people are, difference between the SS and regular Army, Nazis and Germans, etc.) because the beginning of the movie can be confusing if you don’t know the story. You might want to do some research, too. And expect to do more explaining after you see it. My kids – 10 & 12 – were captivated all the way through, without any sign of boredom, or not understanding what was going on. The violence is no more than kids see on t.v. No blood or gore, except for a mild scene at the beginning which is just standard war movie stuff. My kids had no trouble with any of it. So, I say, take the kids if they like war movies or adventure stories. Give them some History before you go, and Enjoy.

    “G-Force” Movie Review

    “G-Force” Plot Summary

A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world. |

    Best FUN movie of 2009

Hi, I watched this movie today and I actually write comments on movies which I hate or LOVE the most. This one belongs to the MOST LOVED category.

    G-Force (2009)(********Spoliers*********)

Directed by Academy Award-winning VFX artist Hoyt Yeatman, making his directional debut, G-Force tells the strange story about a secret special US government organization of skilled trained animals. Funded by FBI, this special agent animals got advanced tools, including an high-tech earpiece that allows them to talk to humans. Things went wrong when FBI decided to shutdown the Unit, making G-Force members to crack down the classified case of Leonard Saber (Bill Nighy).

Written by Cormac Wibberley, Marianne Wibberley tells the amazing story of Guinea pigs, happens to be Secret Agents. Even tough the plot evolves with usual ‘Underdog-Pixar 3D story lines’, it really makes a mark during the second half. They managed to created unique personalities to their characters, but at some parts I smelled Stereotypes.

The voice actors were brilliant, especially PenГ©lope Cruz as Juarez the female Spanish Guinea pig, Tracy Morgan as Blaster and Steve Buscemi as Bucky the Hamster. The much surprise came from Nicolas Cage as Speckles the Star-Nosed Mole, and I don’t know why he altered his great sound for this character, I found it difficult to recognizance the original voice. All in all it was Sam Rockwell who wind up the show with his Heroic character Darwin.

And the soul created for this movie by Trevor Rabin was stunning. The score really toned the action sequences, and the story development.

As a VFX student I enjoyed this movie from start to end, it’s a great fun movie, I recommend it to everyone. In story wise and in technically wise it’s eye-candy. I must say I never seen such a CGI execution in detail (not even in Transformers), such a brilliant work from director Hoyt Yeatman. He truly deserves some recognition. And also the legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer teaming again with Walt Disney for his first 3D feature. By G-Force he really marked his position again.

I give this movie 10 out of 10. And I am waiting for the Sequel!

G-Force = Be the Force with YOU.
