“Avatar” Movie Review
“Avatar” Plot Summary
A paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
AVATAR has a soul
AVATAR has a soul I saw AVATAR today. It was a boiling 40 degrees Celsius in Australia. I caught a bus and train to get there. I spent months on a forum before that. Incremental stops included a scriptment, stills, a teaser, a foot, AVATAR day and a full trailer. Now released I have had many reviews to read which have been mostly very positive. It is a marvel to watch. The opening scenes are very sci-fi with a glimpse of low gravity aboard a space-craft. Sam Worthington fills us in with a short narration. He is taking over his diseased brother’s role in the AVATAR program. These opening scenes are actually among the most effective 3D in the film, pulling you into this story, tracking shots putting you into the steps of the characters. I jump ahead, like the film, to The world of Pandora which is lush with earthly life as seen through pulp fantasies. The rendering of this world is terrific. The life and activity is in the plants as much as it is the animals. Wonder is generated with this ambitious creation. Cameron has lifted the bar. The CG is the best I have ever seen. Everything you have heard is true. The 3D enhances this with leaves falling and swaying branches life-like in the foreground. The realisation of the Navii is also ambitious. They are CG but there are many moments that make you think they are real and in terms of the story they are more than good enough to propel the narrative with strong emotional content. I went into this film knowing mostly everything within it. Hours of reading, some from the treatment and pages of the recent reviews. It is very much a family film like ‘Nealz’ said in his IMDb review. There is a moment where one of the ferocious animal species that earlier were attacking Jake are seen with a litter, the children in the audience loved the cute pups! The spiritual side of this film is much better than expected. It is in fact a beautiful story. The structure is classical film-making but with amazingly new scope in CGI to express grand images. An epic The journey that Jake takes through Pandora is lovely. He is taken in by the Navii and explores their culture, language and habitat. Natirii, the female Navii he meets while lost, helps him through this journey. This is a love story of both soul mates and with a wider picture. Existential connections with the natural world. Personal destiny. I had tears in this film. I tried to hold them back but by the roll of credits they came. This is a movie that I have anticipated for so long. I think the ingredients of its story and my connection to this films production gave me a very emotional response. I cant imagine this disappointing any of the fans on the board. Keeping in mind that it is a family film but delivered everything I wanted. Expect a special edition. After AVATAR is a hit, a special edition will make its way to the cinema. I can understand why they would cut the earth scenes and it works. The actual film seems pretty brisk and it could also have more padding out. You want more of it and that is a triumph for this type of film running two and a half hours. It is a good balance because at two and a half hours AVATAR is aimed directly at the cinema going audience. Broadly appealing with elements for everyone. My earlier prediction of a billion or more world-wide seems safe. I don’t want to go on about visuals too much but the lovely shots of the natural wonderland of glowing life in still 3D shots is magical. Something to take kids to see. Floating tiny neon life jellyfish their way through the air with grace. The monkey-like extra-limbed creatures with the peeping eyes flock through the forrest quickly. The creature design is done in a clever way with the motion of a living thing. The action is over the top, epic, frenetic and a new take on the battle sequence. James Cameron didn’t stuff this up. He probably pressed the studio way beyond their comfort zone with the time, money and effort that has gone into this. Sam Worthington is excellent casting choice. Sigourney Weaver ads frank reason. Stephen Lang chews the scenery as the ultimate you know what. Zoe Saldana is beautiful as Jakes guide into this world and. I went to the cinema and it was a very hot day. By the time I left the cinema, the streets were wet with rain. A warm humidity was thick in the air. Lightning splashed my walk to the train station with white light. I honestly wondered if It was my time to be struck down with a bolt of electricity from the sky. Watch this film. It is destined to become a childhood classic to many little-ones too young to be on this forum. It will be talked about at high school by male and females as spectacular. It will be watched multiple times by fans. I loved it but beyond my appreciation for the film itself, is the the message of love permeating from this movie that I hope enters the zeitgeist like elements of Cameron’s other stories have. At its heart is a soul. AVATAR is an achievement in many technical departments but I wouldn’t say the story is deficient. It is a beautiful experience and the story is surprisingly what I loved most. Believe the hype.

“Kramer vs. Kramer” Movie Review
“Kramer Versus Kramer” Plot Summary
A just divorced man must learn to care for his son on his own, and then must fight in court to keep custody of him. add synopsis
A fine movie
No, this has nothing to do with the sitcom ‘Seinfeld’ or its eccentric and hilarious character Cosmo Kramer. In reality, ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ is a fine drama movie, without a doubt one of the finest of its kind and one of the greatest movies ever. I’m glad that it won more Oscars than ‘Apocalypse Now’ because it really deserved such glory.’Kramer vs. Kramer’ is an excellent film, so well made and so perfectly balanced that I wouldn’t change anything about it in any way. There is nothing wrong with the film. It’s film-making of the highest quality. And it stands the test of time, too. Not only it doesn’t look any dated, but also its cultural impact is long-lasting and its realistic story remains just as significant as it was when it came out in 1979. A timeless classic. They don’t make movies like this today
This movie is dramatic, realistic, simple but brilliant, intense, powerful, sweet and even tragic and depressing sometimes. Yet, it has fine humor as well. It has no special effects, but who cares? This is not the movie or place to discuss such thing. For a movie like this, such thing would be pointless and absolutely unnecessary
The story is very interesting. The actors’s chemistry is just perfect. All of the actors are great, but the 3 main ones are the very best. Dustin Hoffman, a brilliant actor, has his greatest performance ever here as the lovable but distant workaholic Ted Kramer. Meryl Streep is great as Ted’s wife, Joanna. And cute little Justin Henry is terrific as the loving but sometimes stubborn Billy, son of Ted and Joanna
The soundtrack is all instrumental and wonderful. The opening song (by the guitarist Frederic Hand) is brilliant. The rest of the soundtrack is mostly Antonio Vivaldi’s classical music and is simply dazzling
This motion picture has also an incredible development of the characters. See the character Ted Kramer: a workaholic who becomes an amazing father after being left with no choice but to take care of his son, trying to adjust these new responsibilities with his job after being left by his wife Joanna. With this, Ted learns about the most beautiful things in life, but also realizes how though life is, with the problems in his job and the return of Joanna, who wants the custody of their son. But even Joanna changes for better and the ending is an unexpected surprise when one sees this for the first time
This movie has also some though things, such as courtroom scenes where both Ted and Joanna face brutal character assassinations unleashed by the lawyers. Another though thing to see is when poor Billy falls off a jungle gym with his toy (a plane) and gets seriously injured on his face. But then again, the scene is very well made and what comes next is very intense: his father runs quickly and crosses numerous blocks, ignoring the traffic to take his son to the hospital
Overall, this is a movie which is a good lesson of life
This should definitely be on Top 250.

“Indecent Proposal” Movie Review
“Indecent Proposal” Plot Summary
A married woman agrees to have sex with another man for $1,000,000. add synopsis
Explores what love really means
Warning, may be some spoilersIndecent Proposal is a film that knows exactly how someone feels when it comes to jealousy. There is a great line in the film after Demi Moore comes back from her encounter with gazillionaire Robert Redford. Her husband, played perfectly by Woody Harlesson, is asking her questions that don’t need to be answered. Because if they are, it will put a damper in their marriage. But he persists and finally Demi shouts out to him, ‘ If I tell you he wasn’t any good then I’m a liar. If I tell you that he was then I’m a whore. ‘ What a brilliantly written line and it is one that lends a perfect ear to what the film is about in most senses. Jealousy is a powerful emotion but being broke and in love is just as powerful on the other end of the scale. What is so great about this film is that is makes us all question what we would do in that exact same situation. Would you let your wife sleep with a man for one million dollars? Could you look at it and say that it was only one night and you can deal with it? Would you say that your marriage is strong enough to overcome something so meaningless? And that is the key issue right there. Is it really that meaningless? If you are married and in love ( if you are together in a monogamous relationship), is there ever a time when sex is meaningless enough to overlook, even if all of your financial problems are solved in the aftermath?Indecent Proposal is a great film in almost every sense. The actors are great, especially Oliver Platt who has a cameo as their lawyer and he gets all the laughs. The direction is great as it never gets anywhere close to pornographic, and it lets the audience decide for themselves what happened on that fateful night. When you look at the whole concept of the film, you know it could get cheesy if handled poorly and irresponcibly. But it never does. It stays on course and delivers the goods. I highly recommend this film and I think it is good to watch it with someone that you love. It will invoke some very interesting conversations after words. But don’t watch it with them if you are afraid of the answers that you might get. That, to me is good film making. Something that leaves you discussing it long after it is over. Indecent Proposal does that.

“I’m Not There” Movie Review
“I’m Not There” Plot Summary
Ruminations on the life of Bob Dylan, where six characters embody a different aspect of the musician’s life and work.
Beautiful, Unique & Full of Life
Todd Haynes (‘Velvet Goldmine’, ‘Far from Heaven’) created a non-linear, truly original film, that must be seen by every Bob Dylan lover. Haynes’s tapestry is ‘inspired by the music and lives of Bob Dylan’ – he introduces us to 6 different Dylans: Jack Rollins (Christian Bale), Woody Guthrie (Marcus Carl Franklin), Jude Quinn (Cate Blanchett), Robbie Clark (Heath Ledger), Billy the Kid (Richard Gere) and Arthur Rimbaud (Ben Whishaw), interweaving their stories in a groundbreaking narrative slightly similar to Todd Solondz’s unsettling, caustic ‘Palindromes’ (2004), in which several very different actresses (and a boy) play a 13 year-old pregnant girl. While ‘Across the Universe’ illustrated The Beatles’ fantastic songs with simple, adorable characters in a psychedelic rhythm, but with little character development (not that I’m complaining: I absolutely love to see visual masters like Baz Luhrmann or Julie Taymor on fire, since their self-indulgence creates wonderful sensorial pieces), ‘I’m Not There’ is much more complex: it’s deeper than conventional biopics (‘Ray’, ‘Walk the Line’), and much smarter than exploitative flicks (the atrocious ‘Factory Girl’). Haynes crafted a unique film that’s a feast for the eyes (thanks to cinematographer Ed Lachman, ‘The Virgin Suicides’, who also co-directed the disgusting ‘Ken Park’ with Larry Clark), ears (Dylan’s music is always a pie in the sky) and mind (it’ll make you admire the man even more, and it doesn’t even need to be an ass-kissing biopic to succeed on that). The cast is heterogeneous and solid, but I think critics are overrating Cate Blanchett for the sheer fact that she’s playing a man (which makes things more challenging for her, indeed), when she’s not really better than most of the cast; a good performance for sure, but I was much more impressed by Christian Bale and the young revelation Marcus Carl Franklin. Julianne Moore, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Michelle Williams play some important women from Dylan’s life, and the always underrated Bruce Greenwood has a small but interesting part. All in all, this isn’t a film that will enjoy big commercial success, and it’s probably too artsy (although, not in a bad way) to get the Academy’s top prize (even though Blanchett’s performance and, maybe, Haynes’s magnificent directing/writing, will probably be remembered), but it’s a real gem for those who want to see something really exciting and original. As for myself, I’m thankful to Haynes and his audacious, faithful producer Christine Vachon (this woman rocks, and in a perfect world, she’d have all the money that a certain Jerry Bruckheimer possesses), who always dare to blow us away – something rare, these days. Fascinating. 10/10.

“Max Payne” Plot Summary
Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a police detective whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin out to avenge her sister’s death. The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.
liked the game, loved the movie
I went into Max Payne thinking I was in for another disappointment when it comes to video games being brought to the big screen, I was wrong. I’ve played the game and I thought it was okay. It seemed more like the Matrix games than anything original, but I digress. I was wowed by the film in the way they actually made it a story and make you actually care for the main character. That hasn’t happened for me since the first Mortal Kombat film, but then the second one sucked so bad I almost cried
The only reason I didn’t rate this higher is that the film takes at least 20 mins to really get going, but after that it sucks you right in. I loved the whole soldiers taking a liquid drug to make them feel invincible to the whoever they were at war with, which sometimes feels like that could be coming around the corner any day now. When the head bad guy starts acting like he’s some kind of god from the drugs I started thinking ‘Can’t wait till Payne kicks his Ass!’ As a story, I think it is a clever mystery story including fabled occult beliefs from the Norse mythology and when Max starts seeing them after taking the drug to get to the bad guys is pretty friggin’ sweet. I felt the film ended as good as any film noir could end after the resolution of the characters. I can’t wait to buy it on DVD and watch it again. That’s all I have for now. See ya next time.

“The Recruit” Plot Summary
A brilliant young CIA trainee is asked by his mentor to help find a mole in the Agency.
Good film, good cast
Colin Farrell, Al Pacino and Bridget Moynihan star in ‘The Recruit,’ a 2003 film directed by Roger Donaldson. Farrell plays a young man recruited by the CIA in the person of Pacino; while training at Langley, he gets close to another trainee (Moynihan). Once out of training, he’s told she’s an infiltrate from another country assigned to following her
As is often said in the film, nothing is as it seems, and both Farrell and the audience are bamboozled more than once. The film has many twists and turns, all of which add up to a very absorbing movie. A weary-looking Pacino is excellent as always, and Farrell is effective
This one keeps the surprises coming, so pay attention.

Excellent! Tom Hanks leads a wonderful cast in this great movie
What an excellent movie this picture was. When I first saw the trailers in October, I thought it might be pretty good.
The Green Mile exceeded my expectations. Tom Hanks leads a wonderful cast in this movie which stands out by far from most others. If you liked Shawshank Redemption, you’ll love this one. I’ve realized just how good Stephen King can write, now that I’ve seen this and Shawshank. It’s three hours long, and worth every minute of it. It touched me in many ways. I was fortunate enough to see it twice. And I will buy it on dvd as soon as it is available. The Green Mile will certainly become a classic. Go see it, you won’t be disappointed.

“GoldenEye” Plot Summary
James Bond teams up with the lone survivor of a destroyed Russian research center to stop the hijacking of a nuclear space weapon by a fellow agent believed to be dead. add synopsis
Excellent Bond film and Brosnan’s best outing
Six years passed between the release of ‘Licence to Kill’ and ‘GoldenEye’, Pierce Brosnan’s debut as Bond, and those six years were clearly beneficial to the franchise. ‘GoldenEye’ has its fair share of flaws, but it feels revitalized and fresh, unlike the film it follows, ‘Licence to Kill’, a lethargic offering that was deservedly the lowest grossing Bond film when adjusted for inflation. ‘GoldenEye’ makes a clean break from previous franchise films, becoming self-aware for the first time and taking on an almost revisionist feel by casting Judi Dench as M and having her call Bond a ’sexist, misogynist dinosaur’. Even the Bond girls are in no way dependent on Bond- if you count the villain she was clearly the uh… ‘dominant’ half of that relationship, and even the ‘good’ girl bossed Bond around. In a way this is refreshing to see, and Brosnan fits the part excellently, never losing his composure, always with a witty one-liner to throw back. The main reason I like Brosnan a lot better than Moore is that he doesn’t take the ‘class’ act too far. He’s classy, charming, witty, but also cruel and ruthless when he needs to be. I don’t see the validity of the claims that he was the wimpiest Bond; he’s got far more physicality than Moore and a much harder edge, generally speaking. ‘GoldenEye’ does have its flaws, of course. The film could have been a whole 20 minutes shorter, the musical score is not one of the best of the franchise (but not nearly as bad as some suggest), and the humor, outside of Brosnan’s one-liners, falls flat most of the time. I’m also not sure about the huge emphasis on technology, which is taken too far at times here, and would be taken even farther into the land of the completely ridiculous later in the series. Then again, it was the mid-90’s and technology was a hot topic. The film handles its subject matter well for the most part. The film’s action set-pieces are terrific and the sets look beautiful. One of the things that impressed me most about ‘GoldenEye’ is that when it went for drama it succeeded reasonably well. Sean Bean and Famke Janssen make a terrific team of villains and Martin Campbell keeps the film moving at a swift pace, drastically improving on John Glen’s work in ‘Licence to Kill’.'GoldenEye’ may not be the best Bond film, but it’s a welcome addition to the series. Brosnan is not as good a Bond as Connery at his best, but he’s on par with Lazenby and Dalton, if not better, and most certainly better than Roger Moore. 20 minutes shorter and ‘GoldenEye’ could have been an absolute classic, but as it is it’s an excellent Bond offering and one of the better Bond films. The title song is terrific, isn’t it?8/10

“The Long Kiss Goodnight” Plot Summary
A women suffering from amnesia begins to recover her memories after trouble from her past finds her again. add synopsis
A Great Film
I disagree with the reviewer who said this film is not for the ‘cerebrally-minded.’ I happen to be somewhat the cerebral type, and I think this is a great film; I love it and have seen it many times
For me, the great things about this film add up to a woman with a full-on assertive, resourceful personality. Of course the drama is all about the wonderful mother and teacher discovering something else true about herself – and learning to merge the two once she ‘remembers herself.’ In the end, her love for her daughter and the tender nurturing person she is merges with the resourceful assertive person who is willing to fight and not give up. Even her daughter has taken on the ‘don’t give up’ when Mom is down. I would think there’s a part in many of us women that can relate to all of this. And that might explain the box office failure and the rerun hit: women had to discover what I imagine was billed as a pure action filmSamuel L. Jackson is his own type of hero, flaws and all, and nobody could say enough about him. He’s another complex character: down-to-earth with a street reality perspective, lower than the average poor man’s detective and fairly desperate himself. And yet heroic in the clinch and full of his own kind of love and respect for what he values in women. He’s just the man to take her on, and let her know when she’s -not- okay. The characters pair in a sort of perfectly out-of-the-box way. So, this ‘cerebral type’ says that this is great writing in terms of characters and storyline. And the violence is an integral part of those characters and story, not added flash or excitement that doesn’t tell us anything about their lives or the urgency of their experiences
And, last but not least, this is a comedy! Great dialogue (and I don’t know who else could have played it like Jackson). So take that glitzy action as part of what makes a comedy work here!

“Apocalypse Now” Plot Summary
During the on-going Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade Green Beret who has set himself up as a God among a local tribe.
Truly a Masterpiece
Somewhere on IMDb there is a discussion about the greatest director of all times (Spielberg, Copolla and others are named there). The greatest argument was around Spielberg and whether he is or isn’t a great director. The problem with Spielberg is that while he is a master technician, most of his films lack depth
Saving Ryan is really outstanding from a technical point of view, but its message is dull and while its very entertaining, it doesn’t make you think about anything. AN is the best movie I ever saw because it combines great shooting with a deep philosophical perspective on so many things, starting from war in general, the clash of civilizations, the condition of soldier in wartimes (is a soldier a hero or an assassin? Brando says he is neither, the french lady says he is both …) and many others. The problem with some people is that they try to argue about whether these points are true or false. But a great movie, and a great piece of art in general is supposed to spark arguments, not to solve them … Maybe Coppola is right, or maybe he isn’t, nobody holds the truth anyway. You can watch this movie for its outer beauty, amazing scenes, great acting and memorable quotes and you will be entirely satisfied. But what really make this movie a masterpiece is its inner quality. You can’t help but make a comparison with the recent Fahrenheit documentary
Both Copolla and Moore tackle similar issues, but while Copolla presents matters from an outside , objective point of view, Moore takes a very partisan position that really compromises the whole point of a documentary … It is really a shame that a film like Fahrenheit 9/11 won a prestigious award like Cannes. But anyway, if you want to start to understand a little of the Vietnam war, the Iraq war, the second World War and any war in general, you should definitely see this movie, and not the other one …
