“City of Ember” Movie Review

“City of Ember” Plot Summary

For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights. But Ember’s once powerful generator is failing … and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker.

Creative fantasy adventure

My 11 year old son and I enjoyed this movie very much, perhaps because neither of us has read the book. Visually it was a treat to visit Ember, a handmade city with no cars, creative clothing and houses and a community where everyone knows you. It just looked so interesting. The movie got off to a quick start, giving just enough back-story to get the mystery of the plot going. I think it is predictable from the beginning that the kids will find a way out, but how they piece together the clues and the specifics of their escape are unravelled in exciting bits and pieces. The suspense worked on two levels- will they find the way out before the City collapses- and will they find the way out before ‘the law’ stops them? While all the actors did a fine job, I particularly enjoyed Saoirse as Lina. And the girls who played Poppy were adorable. My son said the same thing as other reviewers about the end- he would have liked to have seen the whole town pouring out into the light.

“Across the Universe” Movie Review

“Across the Universe” Plot Summary

The music of the Beatles and the Vietnam War form the backdrop for the romance between an upper-class American girl and a poor Liverpudlian artist.

excellent and artistic film

This film is extraordinary. It is extremely artistic, thought provoking, and has substance. It may not be for everyone. If you have no sense of over laying, or collage, or recognizing parallel stories from history repeating themselves, you may not connect with it. But I found this film to be over the top creative and entertaining. Since I grew up in the 60’s, and I appreciate the music of the Beatles, there was a personal connection to all of it. A lot of fun yet deep emotions were brought to the surface. I know a creative mind when I see one and Taymor and her collaborators are a ‘10′ in this regard. I will see it again.

“Hunger” Movie Review

“Hunger” Plot Summary

The last six weeks of the life of the Irish republican hunger striker Bobby Sands.

Grim but Good

Film about IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands in 1981 but although the film is bookended by some on screen text that puts it in its historical and political context, it is mostly concerned with the actions of the individuals involved the guards and the prisoners

For the majority of the film there is hardly any speech, you just see the very grim day-to-day reality – except for the key scene of the film which is a conversation between Sands and a priest which is done in two long, unmoving takes

It’s quite a powerful film, and very hard to watch in places. It reminded me of ‘Downfall’ in some ways a good film but not one I’d want to see again anytime soon.
