The mother of all sequals…
Jaws will always be remembered in history for so many things, but what I’ve chose to comment here, is about how sequels are now part of the main stream and how they are marketed. Planet of the Apes, and few other ‘franchises’ had existed before Jaws, but none have been copied, parodied, or are engraved in the mind of the public as the Jaws franchise. Jaws was one of the first film franchises to use a number after the title, along with aggressive add campains. For years every sequel that has come out uses something from the Jaws ‘book’ of ‘how to’ when it comes to sequels. Down to the taglines: ‘Just when you thought it was safe…,’ ‘See it before…’ ‘The (place your number here) dimension in terror’,…and the all too famous: ‘This time…it’s personal..’Face it, the Jaws sequels are bad, and yet still can be watched, because they are not as bad as most sequels, yet taught many film makers what NOT to do with a franchise.

“The Punisher” Plot Summary
After his wife and family are killed, G-Man Frank Castle takes it upon himself to distribute punishment to those responsible for the vendetta.
GREAT MOVIE! vigilante-style justice done right
‘The Punisher’ is a shining example of revenge and vigilante-style justice done right. It’s also yet another comic book adaptation done properly. I thought this movie was one of the best I have seen in a long time. In the compendium of comic movies, this falls just shy of the two X-Men movies and Spider-Man but easily surpasses Batman, Batman Begins, Superman and The Hulk. The fact that it is an R-rated movie will kill any possible chance of decent box-office numbers, but it was a necessary step to take, and the quality of the movie just makes up for it. Hopefully this was Thomas Jane’s breakout role, as he was outstanding and has the potential to be a contender to Ben Affleck, Hugh Jackman, Colin Farrell, and Matt Damon as the next big action star. If you like action movies, check out this movie. If you like comic book adaptations, check out this movie. Heck, if you just like movies in general, The Punisher is two hours well-spent. Like Thomas Jane himself says, ‘Frank Castle is dead. Long live The Punisher.’

“Lord of War” Plot Summary
An arms dealer confronts the morality of his work as he is being chased by an Interpol agent.
A ‘Stylish’ Look At Arms Dealing
This was a very pleasant surprise, far better than I had ever hoped, filled with fabulous cinematography and riveting story about the life of arms dealer during the 1980s and ’90s
It was an interesting film, to say the least, and Nicholas Cage was terrific as the lead character, ‘Yuri Orlov.’ I loved his narration, too. How much of what he said is true, I have no idea, but it’s fascinating stuff. Don’t believe a lot of it, even when they tell you it is ‘based’ on true events. Most of still can (and usually) is made up for dramatic purposes
I felt those visuals, combined with the outstanding acting and always-interesting story made this a good film. It also proved you don’t need action every two minutes to keep a film involving for the audience. This has just the right amount of drama, suspense, action, romance and, yes, even humor. With all the political comments made here in the narration I was wondering if I was going to hear the typical Democrat whine and sure enough, late in the film a comment is made regarding the 2000 elections. The liberals still can’t get over losing, fair and square. They just can’t accept that. This is about the fifth time I’ve heard this in 2007 films although at least time, the guy making the absurd statement was the Liberian dictator…..but it really was the film maker, of course. Despite that, and the very pessimistic storyline that evil always wins in the world. According to Bible of ‘Yuri,’ in the end, the meek won’t inherit the earth; the arms dealers will and that evil rules, so why fight it and yourself over it. Wow, what uplifting words to live by. Outside of Yuri’s wife ‘Ava’ (Bridget Moynahan) and the man who pursues him, ‘Jack Valentine’ (Ethan Hawke) no one in here has much in the way of high-ground morals. At least they made the lawman an honest; that’s rare in films today. Jared Leto plays Cage’s brother ‘Vitaly’ and plays his standard slime-ball character. Wow, this guy is becoming the male Jennifer Jason Leigh, regarding sleazy roles. Everyone was solid in here, from the Americans to the Russians the Africans….and all intriguing people. Ian Holm as rival arms dealer ‘Simeon Weisz’ deserves mention
Amir Mokri is the cinematographer and Andrew Niccol, the director, who combined to make this movie look so stylish and beautiful to see. Looking at Mokri’s resume, I see he’s done a number of stylish films. Niccol hasn’t directed much but what he has also offers interesting visuals
Looking at the front and back cover of the DVD might make you think this is just another of these brainless action flicks, but it is not. This is solid film.

“Shanghai Noon” Plot Summary
Jackie Chan plays a Chinese man who travels to the Wild West to rescue a kidnapped princess. After teaming up with a train robber, the unlikely duo takes on a Chinese traitor and his corrupt boss. add synopsis
perfect blend of action and comedy, the funniest western ever
This movie is a perfect blend of action and comedy. This movie stars Jackie Chan as Chon Wang, one of the soldiers of the army of the forbidden city in China. When the princess leaves and goes to America it is up to Chon to bring her back. When he gets to Nevada, where most of the story takes place he meets Roy O’Bannon played by Owen Wilson u’ll ever meet. He is a wanted outlaw and in an odd chain of events they become a duo. This is the funniest western, this movie surpasses Blazing Saddles by far. Blazing Saddles is funny but the one-liners that Owen Wilson drop are just so hilarious. ‘I don’t know Karate but I do know crazy, and I will use it’. Lucy Lui also stars as the Princess This movie is definitely worth seeing but you kinda wanna steer clear of the sequel ‘Shanghai Knights’ It does not do the first film justice. I have never been able to complete the second one mainly because it is boring. But salutes to Shanghai Noon the funniest western to date. 9 out of 10

“The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury” Plot Summary
This story opens with the new action hero and the two other survivors of Pitch Black already caught by a giant spaceship filled with dread… add synopsis
Great mini-movie, much better than the sequel
To anyone who has seen the excellent ‘The Matrix’ and its horrible sequels, this animated movie ‘Dark Fury’ is exactly the same as the ‘Last Flight Of The Osiris’ (short animation) for ‘The Matrix’.So, we have a great movie (‘Pitch Black’), and a very weak sequel (The Chronicles Of Riddick). But this little animated gem brings back our anti-hero in familiar territory: a great story (even though it’s short) and some great sci-fi ideas (the frozen ‘collection’ and the cyborg monster, for example).
If you liked Pitch Black it’s guaranteed you will like this one. It can also stand on its own (no need to see anything else, although you would get curious), which is always a good indication of brilliance.

“Apollo 13″ Movie Review
“Apollo 13″ Plot Summary
True story of the moon-bound mission that developed severe trouble and the men that rescued it with skill and dedication.
An exciting time
Boys own adventure about the ill fated ‘Apollo 13′ mission which was to follow the successful journey that saw Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the surface of the moon.
Ron Howard deftly recreates the tension, ambition, hope and disappointment which accompanied the crew who dreamed of writing yet another page in ’space race’ history. Ronnie helms with a purpose, never allowing any sidelines or subplots to undermine the story which he skilfully builds to not one, but several nail biting climaxes. Many of us know the story, yet writers John Sayles, William Broyles Jnr. and Al Reinart still manage to entertain us with an involving screenplay which recreates the excitement of the time.
All the technical teams have masterfully brought to life the NASA Space Centre at Cape Kennedy, along with the amazing hardware that goes with it. The take-off sequence is especially well produced thanks to some stunning special effects and clever cinematography (Dean Cundey – who wields with effect throughout the pic).
Tom Hanks convincingly personifies the ambitious dreamer Jim Lovell, sharing with us his trials and his triumphs. In support of him is Bill Paxton (in perhaps his biggest role to date), finally playing a character who is not paranoid, and doing so very well. Kevin Bacon also joins the crew, playing a late replacement for the devastated Gary Sinise, who is ousted due to concerns he may contract the measles. Back at Cape Kennedy, an impressive Ed Harris calls the shots in an Academy nominated role, keeping his feet firmly on the ground, unlike his turn in ‘The Right Stuff’.
James Horner provides a familiar sounding theme.

“Kate & Leopold” Movie Review
“Kate and Leopold” Plot Summary
Kate and her actor brother live in N.Y. in the 21st Century. Her ex-boy friend, Stuart, lives above…
Typical Romantic Comedy With A Twist Of Time Travelling
‘Kate and Leopald’ is a typical romantic comedy, only this time one of the protagonists travels from the 30s (?) to modern day New York. It’s clear that one shouldn’t expect anything more than laughter and a few mushy moments of love from this film and that is the case. If one watches it with lower expectations, it can be quite enjoyable. I liked the Hugh Jackman – Meg Ryan pairing. They both share the required chemistry and provide some of the nicer moments. Ryan plays her usual romcom city lass persona (and I haven’t tired myself from seeing her in such roles…yet but I now prefer to see her in different genres ). Hugh Jackman has a knack for comedy and he should do more such films if given a more intelligent script. Breckin Meyer and Liev Schreiber are great. To further prevent yourself from getting irritated, quit analyzing the film as there are several plot holes and some situations seem chopped. You can ask lots of question like how Leopold adapts to modern New York so quickly or how would an ultra-modern Kate (who’s never travelled) make it in 30’s (?) England (?) So one could enjoy it a little if they suspend their beliefs. even so, the ending seems a little too abrupt (predictable as it is). In spite of the flaws, there are the few nice moments and the few funny moments that don’t make it all that bad.

“Orphan” Movie Review
“Orphan” Plot Summary
A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be.
The best straight horror film in quite a while
When I was younger, I was a scaredy-cat when it came to a great many movies. I saw Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners at a young age which left me with a solid week worth of sleepless nights, I was terrified of the evil vines in Jumanji and I even had a fear of serial snipers after watching Dirty Harry. However as I grew, I became braver and less haunted even by horror films until I finally became numb to almost everything. Certainly the odd scene of a fright flick would give me a start and perhaps even a bad dream, but few films have been able to recapture the restless nights of my youth. Until I saw Orphan
While perhaps not as great a compliment as it once was with Hollywood’s iron grip on the horror industry, Orphan is the downright creepiest and most frightening pure horror film in a many, many years. The Orphanage (similar name a coincidence, I assure you) from last year gave me some haunted evenings but is more of a dramatic thriller. Countless films have capitalized on the evil child angle as a platform for the scares, in fact with the now even more relatively awful The Unborn coming out this very year. But those who have crafted such a film intelligently and to a genuinely disturbing end are sparse and in between. In the case of Orphan a much of this success is due to young Isabelle Furhman, who gives an incredibly intense and disturbingly authentic portrayal as Esther, the Russian orphan. Complimenting that role are four other outstanding performances by Aryana Engineer and Jimmy Bennett as Esther’s now sister and brother, and Vera Farmiga and Peter Starsgaard as the adopting parents. If there have been better performances in a horror film I haven’t been privy
Finally recovering after the devastating loss of their unborn child, Kate and John Coleman (Farmiga and Starsgaard) feel it is time to welcome some new life into their home and settle on the different but charming and incredible gifted 10 year old Esther. Things could not be better for this broken family, Esther bonds immediately with young Max who is a mute, and fits wonderfully in with her two loving parents. But then, strange occurrences begin to arise, and Esther always seems to be there and soon Kate begins to think, as the movie’s tagline of the film implies, there’s something wrong with her
In almost every horror film ever made, we have a central protagonist who is scoffed at by everyone and their mother at their wild claims of a killer, an alien, strange occurrences etc. In Orphan it is Kate who is the sole voice of desperation, but what makes this film work besides the wonderful acting job by Farmiga is the back-story of loss and her former alcoholism which sheds doubts on her suspicions. This coupled with Esther’s seemingly endless cunning and manipulation of Kate’s children makes for a frustratingly disturbing series of events. Director Juan Collet-Serra, who helmed 2005’s House of Wax, chooses to keep the gore restrained, tension high and focus on some equally tragic human elements about a broken marriage and what broke it apart. Collet-Serra holds no punches, and is unafraid to go all the way into truly disturbing territory and includes many elements of the anti-Hollywood horror film and is fairly light on the cliches. The final twist is shocking (if you say you knew it you’re lying) and brilliantly explains all the former questions the audience demands. Be warned, just because Orphan is not as bloody as some makes it no less disturbing and I applaud its ability to give me an uneasy sleep and a shot of much needed nostalgia

“Titanic” Movie Review
“Titanic” Plot Summary
Fictional romantic tale of a rich girl and poor boy who meet on the ill-fated voyage of the ‘unsinkable’ ship.
The triumph of contemporary tripe
The tragedy of the doomed ship Titanic has inspired many books and movies. The battle between nature and technology always caught man’s imagination. The latest film concerning this tragedy in the Atlantic Ocean was written and directed by famous action movie filmmaker James Cameron. The story of ‘Titanic’ involves two fictional characters (Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) from different backgrounds (one is a hobo-artist, the other is an aristocrat) and how their love triumphs over societal barriers and the tragedy of a sinking ship that they happen to be on.
First of all, although using a historical name, this movie had little regard to history. The plot was built around two fictional lovers, French diamond, and treasure hunters. The deaths of over a thousand of people on the greatest luxury ship of its time became a mere background. Many historical facts were simply forgotten. Where was the radio operator that ignored the iceberg warnings? Why was there no mention of the ship that was only 5 miles away from the Titanic but did not come to the rescue because its captain failed to identify the distress signal? Omitting these facts is an insult to the tragedy. And what was the point of flavoring this historical disaster with fictional cheesy romance when the story is already as sad as it is.
The overall plot was rather shallow; rich equals greed and corruption, poverty equals compassion and heroism. It is very ironic to spend $200 million to make a movie about how money corrupts. There was absolutely no human side shown in anti-heroes. It seemed like Billy Zane was playing a part of the devil. Casting was also very poor. If DiCaprio was 2 inches shorter than Winslet, you could swear she was his baby-sitter. The length of the movie was unnecessarily stretched to over 3 hours. First hour and the half was wasted on establishing the relationships between the characters that were known to audience long before they went to theater and the dialogue that was used to do so made it even worse. Hearing corny pick up lines such as ‘I see you’ and ‘This is my side of the ship’ generated more pain than the screams of drowning people. Also, jokes were too abundant and rather lame.
‘Titanic’ did involve some moving scenes such as the part when the musicians were playing while the ship was sinking but they were no way near anything original. The best thing about this film were its special effects, and that is the only thing that truly deserved an award.
Although this film lacked artistical value in overall sense, the public could not resist a sentimental story starring Romeo (DiCaprio), and so the movie became a success. Now it is safe to say that the industry will be less hesitant to invest large amounts of money in a single motion picture, so it seems that ‘Titanic’ did achieve something after all.

“Scream 2″ Movie Review
“Scream 2″ Plot Summary
It has been two years since the tragic events at Woodsboro. Sidney Prescott and Randy Meeks are trying to get on with their lives… add synopsis
My favorite of the three films.
Two years has passed… the infamous murders at Woodsboro has turned into a movie. Since the novel is written by reporter Gale Wheaters (Courtney Cox). Two college students (Jada Pinkett Smith and Omar Epps) were killed in a sneak peak of a horror movie called ‘Stab’, which is based on Wheaters’ book. Now Sidney (Neve Campbell), Randy (Jamie Kennedy), Dewey (David Arquette), Gale and Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) find themselves in danger. This killer certainly wants something from Sidney, so she’s also putting her boyfriend (Jerry O’Connell) and her two friends (Timothy Olyphant & Elise Neal) in deep trouble as well
Directed by Wes Craven (The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left, Shocker) made an truly enjoyable sequel to ‘Scream’ that is even more entertaining and funnier than the original. The script by Kevin Williamson (Cursed, Teaching Miss Tingle) certainly made some truly fun writing about the rules of a sequel. This was just as a blockbusters as the original was. Some film critics (For example the late Gene Siskel) felt the sequel was much better. There’s an amusing film within the film, which those scenes are directed (uncredited) by Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids Trilogy, Grindhouse, The Faculty).
The Original DVD has an sharp non-anamorphic Widescreen (2.35:1) transfer and an strong Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD includes Cast & Crew information and the original theatrical trailer. The only flaw in the sequel is the conclusion, which is a bit too much. ‘Scream 2′ has many funny moments as well for suspenseful moments. A good cast certainly helps. Heather Graham, Joshua Jackson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Tori Spelling, Luke Wilson and others appears in bit parts. ‘Scream 2′ is certainly one of the better sequels has to offer these days and don’t miss it. Also available in a collector’e edition DVD with anamorphic widescreen, commentary by the filmmakers and more. Panavision. (****/*****).
