“Abyss” Movie Review

“Abyss” Plot Summary

A civilian diving team are enlisted to search for a lost nuclear submarine and face danger while encountering an alien aquatic species.

Deeply Amazing

Dear Readers,

One of my favorite Sci-Fi films is The Abyss, a deep water action/adventure film by the master of Science Fiction, James Cameron. A stunning thriller filmed almost entirely underwater and one of the first films to feature CGI effects. But it’s not the special effects that define this film. It’s the plot, the script, the characters, and the direction.

The Abyss begins with a US Nuclear Submarine encountering an anomaly in the ocean, causing them to crash into a trench at the bottom of the ocean. The US Navy is powerless to reach them because of an incoming Hurricane. So instead they hire a group of underwater oil miners led by Virgil ‘Bud’ Brigman. Brigman’s soon-to-be-ex-wife, Lindsay, infuriated that her underwater oil rig is being used for a military operation, tags along with a group of Navy SEALS led by the cold Lieutenant Coffey. As they investigate the Sub wreckage, the Divers and the SEALS encounter a power living down in the Abyss…A power with the ability to save the world or destroy it.

James Cameron outdoes himself with this underwater thriller and so does the cast. You get inside each of the characters heads and see each their points of view. Ed Harris plays his role quietly and coolly, playing a man who’s become bitter from losing his wife and questioning whether there is life at the bottom of the ocean. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is awesome as Lindsay Brigman, a dedicated engineer and scientist determined to prove that the life at the bottom of the Abyss is not a threat to mankind. Michael Biehn steals the show, though, as the slowly-going-insane Lieutenant Coffey. Not since watching Platoon have I seen such insanity in a man. Gone is the cool charming character of Kyle Reese and instead is a man who will kill anything that threatens his mission.

Point blank: Watch this film.

Parental Warning: There’s some mild swearing and tense moments, but there’s also a scene of nudity as well. I recommend not letting your kids see this if they’re under teenage years. You be the judge.

“Public Enemies” Movie Review

“Public Enemies” Plot Summary

The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.

One of the best movies of 2009

I am a big Michael Mann film, Heat & Collatoral are amazing films and I feel that Mann delivered the goods big time in Public Enemies

Public Enemies is the story of the Depression Era bank robber John Dillinger (played by the charming Johnny Depp) who leads the FBI on a cat mouse chase. J. Edgar Hoover (played by Billy Crudup), the director of the FBI, orders Melvin Purvis (played by Christian Bale) to hunt down John Dillinger and his gang. With the FBI hot on his tail, Dillinger still manages to pick up a girl he likes in Billie Frechette (played by Marion Cottliard).

This movie is very entertaining and mesmerizing, it may have started out slow for the first third, but during the last 2/3′rds of the film this movie picked up. Mann is a expert craftsman, he gets you to fall in love with John Dillinger, yet he gets you to feel sympathetic for Melvin Purvis, who was given a practically impossible task

This movie is highlighted by the stunning cinematography that Mann is known for, as well as the action scenes such as the Little Bohmia shootout and the Dillinger jail break and others

I honestly could see Billy Crudup getting an Oscar nod for this movie, because his Hoover was a scene stealer, and maybe Johnny Depp. Bale as always plays a great straight man like in much of movies to counteract the eccentric leading man (i.e. 3:10 to Yuma, The Dark Knight). Cotiliard is also solid as Billie, and the times when she hits her mark, she REALLY hits it and gets the audience behind her

This is by far the best and most intelligent movie to come out in the summer of 2009. I recommend that most people buy the Blu-Ray/DVD because they will not be disappointed. No one in Hollywood does high octane crime dramas as well as Michael Mann.

    “Mystic River” Plot Summary

With a childhood tragedy that overshadowed their lives, three men are reunited by circumstance when one loses a daughter.

Best movie for a long time

This film truely shows the mastermind of Clint Eastwood. This is not only the his best movie so far, but also the best movie of this genre for a long time

If Sean Penn does not get an Oscar for his performance, then this institution becomes questionable to me.

    “Friday the 13th” Movie Review

    “Friday the 13th” Plot Summary

Camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to re-open a summer camp that was the site of a child’s drowning.

The film that started it all

Friday the 13th, as we all know, it’s the film that started it all when it came to one of the most memorable boogeymen, Jason Vorhees. I’m afraid though that this isn’t the film that he stars in, it’s actually his mother that started the whole ‘have sex and die’ sacred rule of horror movies. Friday the 13th has kind of a harsh rating here on IMDb, this is a classic in some sense I think, it’s the ultimate sleepover movie and still gives me a little scare when I watch it in the dark. Friday the 13th also started the cheesy acting, un-needed sex scenes, blood, and gore; wither that’s a good or bad thing, I’m still not sure, but one thing that Friday the 13th does deliver is awesome death scenes that will never disappoint. It’ll also make you think twice about going to camp

A group of young adults are opening up Camp Crystal Lake after 20 years, the place has been dubbed as a cursed camp where two young counselors were brutally murdered and a young boy drowned. But the group continues getting the camp ready, but when a nasty storm ensues, the group separates and does their own thing. But one by one, they keep disappearing, but when Alice, one of the camp counselors is concerned with how everyone is not returning, she goes to find a nasty discovery and will have to survive the most terrifying night of her life

Friday the 13th is a memorable film in it’s own right, I know that the performances are horrible, I mean, this is no Halloween, but it’s a different concept and scared a lot of people. I remember it scared me as a kid to go to camp, that’s for sure. But it has tense music and very scary scenes and it keeps the best going, along with a huge amount of sequels to come, we’re up to 20, right? LOL, just kidding, it’s only 10 that I’m aware of, but I would recommend Friday the 13th for the horror fans, it’s always a fun movie to watch.7/10
